Sometimes I think about starting a lawn maintenance business. Not to get rich, just to spend my days tidying up yards. I borrowed my neighbor’s edger the other day. Whoa! A good edger is a game changer. crisp little cut lines along the sidewalks and patio boarders look great.
It’s odd that I get satisfaction from yard work. I had to help maintain our yard growing up, and there were few things that I hated more. Really didn’t like it. I suppose we can learn to like things.
Have you learned to like anything new lately?
When we’re kids, our parents can jump start that process for us. They can make us do things we don’t want to do, repeatedly, until we grow to appreciate the thing we disliked. It’s harder to get ourselves into that spot. This week I heard a story of a friend not wanting to embrace the change a doctor was recommending. It can be hard to trust someone more than we trust our own desires or inclinations? “Why should I do that? I don’t want to.”
Last night I had a conversation with some buds where we were agreeing about the beauty of faith giving us a truth that is outside of us. How comforting it can be to believe that my emotions, inclinations, assumptions or opinions don’t define reality. Jesus does. Maybe that’s one reason Jesus talks about entering the Reign of God like a little child. Trusting God to line us up with what’s right.
